World needs spring of Islam: Jamaat-e-Islami chief

Hyderabad: The world needs another "spring of Islam" to bring it out of the
darkness and remove the ills plaguing it in all spheres of life, said Jamaat-e-
Islami Hind president Moulana Jalaluddin Umri.

Inaugurating a three-day 'Spring of Islam' conference here Friday, he contended
that Islam alone can offer solutions to the problems that humanity is facing as it
is the natural way of life.

Referring to corruption scandals, moral degradation, injustice, inequality and exploitation, Umri said it was only on the basis of Islamic ideology that an ideal

society can be created.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind – Monthly Press Conference, Jan  2013

first of all, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind expresses grief over the sad demise of the young medical student
following the ghastly act of gang rape and brutal assault. We extend our deep sympathy with
the family members of the victim and demand immediate justice for them.
In strongest and harshest terms, we condemn the horrific incident of 16th December when the
student
was brutally assaulted by six men in a moving bus in Delhi. The culprits should be given maximum
and exemplary punishment for their wild and savage acts.
We support the nationwide outrage against the brutal act. We support the demand of the
protestors
and common people for harsher laws and maximum punishment to the offenders of heinous crimes
like rape. It is good that along with the masses, two top political parties of the country are also
demanding harshest laws for such crimes. BJP has demanded death penalty while Congress has
demanded imprisonment up to 30 years for rape convicts. Both parties have also suggested
chemical castration (emasculation) of rapists as punishment.
Such demands point to the natural anguish over the heinous crimes like rapes. Addressing such
natural urge, Islam has 1400 years ago prescribed capital punishment – and that too in public
place – for rapists. This Islamic criminal law is very much relevant today and will always be so. The countries which are following this law have far lesser number of rape incidents compared to other
 countries.
We think that making stronger laws will be addressing the symptoms, not the roots of the disease
. Harshest punishment will be just one of the deterrents to sex crimes. So the issue of rapes or other
crimes against women should be seen in wider perspective. There is a need to block all the doors
that are bringing in the disease. Apart from prescribing maximum punishment for rapes, Islam
prevents all possible sources that promote the heinous crime.

Main factors of steep rise in sex crimes against women in India
There are social, economic and legal factors that have together contributed to the rise in sex crimes.
Main factors are: Invasion of nude western culture; Commercialization of human susceptibilities
particularly alcohol, gambling and sex; Industrialization of nudity and vulgarity (Through Film,
TV and Internet); Industrialisation of fashion; Official patronage of alcoholism, drugs and bar
culture; Weak laws; Sluggish judicial system; Low conviction rate; Role of Police.

Social and commercial factors
In last few decades particularly after the inception of globalization era the nude, godless western
culture has invaded the rather religious Indian society resulting in the change of both attitude and
attire of the people. Sex crimes have always had great connection with alcohol and drugs –it has
been proved in both social and scientific researches. It is widely known that alcohol increases the
risks of unhealthy sexual behaviour. Yet, our country has commercialized alcohol, drugs and
gambling.
It is patronizing bar and disco culture. While Film and TV were already promoting nudity in the
society, Internet in last 10 years has corrupted the young minds with unchecked floods of crude
sex videos and photos available on internet.
India needs check on blind aping of nude western culture, commercialization of sex, complete ban
on alcohol and drugs, check on the contents of film, TV and Internet. There must not be any place
for nudity and nakedness in a civilised society. There should be a concerted campaign against all the manifestations of evils.

Legal factors
Apart from the social and societal reasons, the weak laws, low conviction rate and sluggish judicial
system have also contributed to the rise of sex crimes in our society.
Criminal laws particularly those dealing with sex crimes like rape are very weak in our county.
These laws do not support victims, rather put the burden of proof on victims themselves. An
overwhelming majority of the rape victims comes from weaker sections who are not in position
to take on the culprits and raise voice against them. The maximum punishment for rape in India is
7 years imprisonment. But the process of justice in our country is so long and complicated that culprits manage release using money and political connections and the rampant corruption in police and
judiciary come in handy. The sluggish court system is resulting in few convictions in criminal cases
including sex crimes. India’s conviction rate for rapes is no more than 26 percent. The court system is painfully slow mainly because of a shortage of judges. Our country has about 15 judges for every 1
million people, while China has 159. A Delhi high court judge once said that it would take 466 years
to get through the backlog of court cases in Delhi alone.
First the anti-rape law should be made stringent. There should be capital punishment for crimes
like rapes. Moreover, the convicts should be punished publicly to deter the potential culprits.
Like crime is publicized punishment should also be publicized. The legal process should be
fast-tracked and freed from the political and executive influences. Such heinous cases should
be disposed of in a fixed time frame. There is an urgent need for police reform. There should be
a campaign against all the factors that lead to crimes including rapes; neglecting anyone will have
 disastrous consequences.
Government committees
Jamaat welcomes the government decision to set up committees to review the present anti-rape
law and find out measures to make the society safe for the women. We hope the committees
will reach the root of the disease and find out the cure.
Justice Verma Committee
In the wake of the recent gang rape incident, the central government has appointed a committee of three eminent Jurists, Justice (Retd.) J.S.Verma, former Chief Justice of India, Justice (Retd.) Leila Seth, former Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh and Gopal Subramaniam, former Solicitor General of India. The Justice Verma Committee is looking into possible amendments to the criminal law for the quicker trial and enhanced punishment for criminals, accused of committing sexual assault of extreme nature against women. The committee was constituted on 23rd Dec. 2012. The last date of sending suggestions is 5th January 2013. It will submit its report in 30 days i.e by 23rd Jan.
(justice.verma@nic.in or through fax at 011-23092675)
Justice Usha Mehra Commission
The government has also set up a Commission of Inquiry under the Chairmanship of Justice
(Retd.) Usha Mehra to look into the ghastly rape incident of 16th Dec. and also suggest
measures to make Delhi and NCR safer for women. The commission will submit its report
within three months, which will be tabled in Parliament along with action taken by the government. Suggestions can be sent to the commission latest by 10th January 2013

Jamaat Condemns Blasphemous Film

Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari has severely condemned the American film blaspheming the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him). Terming the release of this film as an act of hurting the Muslims of the world, he expressed grave concern over the fact that America fails in making concerted efforts to contain such anti-Islam activities in spite of expressing displeasure over them.

The Jamaat chief expressed his confidence that conspiracies to tarnish the image of Islam and denigrate the personage of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) have failed earlier also. And even now no country or group, despite investing talents and resources, can harm the truth of Islam and the majesty of the Prophet who is the Mercy to mankind. Therefore, people should keep from destructive activities aimed at spoiling world peace and try to understand the Message of Peace and Salvation Islam gives and the position of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) as Mercy to all the worlds.

Declaring the protests, being staged in Muslim countries against the heart-rendering American film, as Muslim masses’ love for and close affinity with their faith and the Messenger of God, the Jamaat leader said the Muslims should prove themselves as Khair-e-Ummat (the best nation) and Ummat-e-Wast (the moderate nation) in every action and every measure they take, and keep from every approach that can bring a bad name to the position and greatness of the community. It would not be right that the crime is committed by one and you punish someone else; it tarnishes the image of Islam.

The Jamaat Ameer appealed to the Islamic Movements and organisations world over to realise the Dawah responsibilities much more so that the common masses might be acquainted with the teachings of Islam, and the ignorance and misapprehensions of the world about Islam, its way of life and ly Messenger be allayed and the incidents like the release of the American film might not be repeated in future.

Iman should be the basis for Muslim Unity, not strategy

Bangalore: June 14, 2012. “Islam is a comprehensive system of life encompassing all spheres of life. If we follow a few aspects and ignore other sections, then it is as if we believe in a few and reject the rest, which has been condemned in Qur’an. Our Ulama should provide leadership in all spheres of life as Prophet Muhammad (s) did not only lead daily prayers but was also a leader in every sphere of life”, said Moulana Muhammad Rafeeq Qasmi, National Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind here in a special gathering of Ulama at BIFT organized by the Majlisul Ulama, Bangalore Metro. Addressing on ‘Role of Ulama in the formation of an ideal society’, Moulana called upon the Ulama to promote the sense of being Khair-e-Ummah (The Best Ummah) among Muslims and prepare them for the cause of reconstructing the society on the lines of Qur’an and Sunnah. Highlighting the importance of Unity of Ummah, Moulana explained that “today people discuss Ittihad (Muslim unity) as a strategic necessity, whereas it is Iman which should be the basis for unity”. Moulana Najmuddeen Husain Umari, Assistant convenor, Majlisul Ulama, Karnataka presented the inaugural words. Moulana Iqbal Ahmed Qasmi was the convenor for the programme.

Press Meet Organised by JIH , New Delhi ,03 MARCH 2012 :

“Homosexual is shameful and Unnatural and will destroy our family system and the move to legalize in this country the shameful and unnatural homosexual relations should be opposed by every right thinking man and woman,” said Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind while addressing to media personas in a press meet today held at its Headquarters in the capital.
“The efforts under the pretext of safeguarding personal freedom, are quite immoral and against human nature. Islam unambiguously declares that all such unnatural acts are ‘haraam’ and all other religions also regard it a sin. Legalizing such things will destroy the family system which will result in disintegration of society,” he opined.

Jamaat chief demanded the government of India to correctly represent the opinion of the majority of the Indians and adopt a clear stand in the Supreme Court.

On completing of 10 Years to Gujarat Muslims’ Massacre, Maulana Umari said, “the whole country is ashamed of the naked dance of communalism and fascism, under the patronage of government, which took place in Gujarat in 2002. These disturbances caused the death of over 2000 innocent men, women and children, besides this, thousands were injured, thousands of houses were burnt or destroyed, and lakhs were rendered homeless or displaced.”

Strongly condemning all these barbaric acts, the Jamaat chief demanded that the process of rendering justice to the victims and punishing the perpetrators should be expedited.

He said, “this is very shameful for our country that a considerable number of victims, up to now, have not got justice and are undergoing suffering.”

Maulana Umari said, “Jamaat thanks Allah that through its Islami Relief Committee Gujarat, it spent about Rs. 25 crore and provided to riot victims financial, legal and moral support. In this connection the dedicated workers of Jamaat had to render not only sacrifices but also underwent imprisonments. Because of Jamaat’s legal battle, recently, the Gujarat High Court has ordered that the over 500 mosques and religious places, which were destroyed in the disturbances, should be compensated by the Gujarat government.”

He demanded the Union government to do its best to get the Anti-Communal Violence Bill passed for curtailing violence, making accountable to administrative machinery and assuring compensation to the sufferers. He  said that Jamaat reiterated its resolve to continue its struggle, with the help of good hearted people of the country to procure justice for the sufferers and

Condemning the recent desecration of the Holy Quran by NATO forces in Afghanistan, Maulna Umari said, “the NATO forces have been continuously perpetrating atrocities in Afghanistan and they have once again committed the crime of desecration of the Holy Quran. This is a much uncivilized extremely inhuman and deeply painful act. The criminals should be given exemplary punishment so that this atrocity is not repeated.”

He further said, “the Holy Quran is the scripture sent down by the Creator and Master of the Universe for guidance and salvation of the entire humanity. It is the height of depravity that some people, blinded by prejudice, commit the crime of desecrating it.”

He invites all the people, especially the people of the west, to seriously read ‘this book sent down by their Lord so that they may know how it shows the way to a pious life.’

He reminded the Muslim Ummah to not only read but wholeheartedly follow the book of Allah so that they may practically convey the message of Islam to the World.

Maulna Ejaz Ahmed Aslam, Secretary of Jamaat was the convenor of the Press-Meet and other leaders of the Jamaat were also present on the occasion.
